TARZAN
Australian television star Mark Herlaar has two distinctive nicknames: “Aussie Tarzan” and “Kiosk Kev”. He gained the former when appearing on the fourth season of Australian Survivor in 2017 and has since earned the latter through his role on the UK version of I’m a Celebrity Get Me Out of Here! Fans of I’m a Celeb will doubtless recognise Herlaar, who first appeared on the show in 2018, as the impressively bearded owner of the Outback Shack, where famous contestants are allowed or denied treats based on whether or not they can answer the 50/50 question Kiosk Kev asks them.
Herlaar, who hails from Toowoomba in Queensland, was 51 years old when he made his television debut on Australian Survivor, the successful Network Ten reality show, in the summer of 2017. Filmed on Upolu, a Samoan Island, the programme is an Aussie spin-off of the hit American show and features 24 contestants vying for the half a million A$ prize money. The contestants were split into two “tribes”, Asaga and Samatau, with Herlaar being part of the latter. Despite his Tarzan nickname, he was unfortunately voted out by his fellow contestants. He did, however, reunite with his fellow Samatauns for an episode of All-Star Family Feud later that year.
Despite his early exit from Australian Survivor, Herlaar was the contestant who went on to bigger things when he became part of I’m a Celebrity Get Me Out of Here! the long-running UK game show filmed in Australia that has become something of a British institution. Here, he wields power over some of Britain’s best-loved celebrities — and has become something of one himself!
